Regional Simulation Program

Our vision for the Regional Vancouver Coastal Health’s Simulation Strategy is to “Lead learning through the use of simulation-based education, and to partner with stakeholders in order to realize our workforce’s potential.” Our multidisciplinary team strives to enable VCH staff to deliver quality patient care and care improvements through: expertise in simulation theory and application, access to a wide range of innovative equipment, coaching and staffing for optimal simulation execution, and promotion of interprofessional education.

In short, our vision is to achieve and support excellence in healthcare simulation.

Application of simulation and its potential impacts include improvement related to:

    1. Clinical skills within professional/student groups
Opportunity for professionals/students to practice skills before trying them on patients, or to improve existing skills
    2. Adoption and familiarity with workflows and procedures
Healthcare professionals can practice unfamiliar workflows such as ACLS algorithms, IV insertion practice guidelines, etc., until they are familiar and comfortable with the process
    3. Communication and care processes within care teams
Opportunity for interdisciplinary care teams to practice unusual and difficult scenarios, so they are better prepared for these events, gain clarity on roles, and practice specific skills to improve patient care processes and outcomes (e.g. mock codes, anaphylactic reaction, etc.)
Opportunity for teams to run simulations and debrief specific adverse events, to identify areas for improvement for future events (risk management and mitigation)
    4. Research new care, technologies, and systems
Can use the simulation environment and/or equipment to test new equipment or care processes prior to introducing into the clinical environment (e.g. a proposed change in guidelines, such as Code Pink algorithms; adoption of a new workflow such as incorporating workstations on wheels in an existing environment)
